Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Location : Lake Charles, LA; On-site

Employment Type : Full-time, temp-to-hire

Schedule : About 50 hours per week with overtime pay

Travel : This role works out of the company's shop and yard.

Compensation : Approximately $40 / hour + Overtime + Full Benefits + 401(k) Match

Lead the Shop and Keep the Iron Running

Our client is an established scrap metal recycling company in Lake Charles with a busy yard and more than 500 containers across various customer sites. Their yard runs on cranes, material handlers, and trucks. They are hiring an experienced heavy equipment mechanic to lead the shop and keep that equipment working.

Position Summary

You will work on a wide range of equipment, including 135-ton cranes, material handlers, excavators, forklifts, skid steers, water pumps, and 18-wheelers. You will be the lead mechanic with a helper on your team. You decide what gets fixed now and what can wait, and you use slow days to get ahead on PMs and repairs.

Essential Responsibilities

Repair & Maintenance

• Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and diesel engine problems.
• Perform PMs, inspections, and service on cranes, material handlers, excavators, forklifts, skid steers, water pumps, and 18-wheelers.
• Catch problems early before they turn into breakdowns.
• Make sure equipment is safe before it goes back to work.

Planning

• Prioritize repairs based on safety and what the yard needs running.
• Coordinate repair timing with operations leadership.
• Use slow periods to knock out PMs and open repairs.
• Recommend when to call in outside service or specialty support.

Shop Leadership

• Direct and train the mechanic helper.
• Order parts and supplies.
• Keep the shop clean, safe, and organized.
• Keep repair and maintenance records.
• Keep leadership updated on equipment status and downtime.

Supervision & Professional Development

• Leads the shop and directs a mechanic helper.
• Hands-on work across a wide range of heavy equipment.
• CDL and TWIC are a plus but not required.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a heavy equipment, construction equipment, or diesel mechanic.
• Hands-on experience with cranes, excavators, material handlers, loaders, or skid steers.
• Strong troubleshooting skills on hydraulic, electrical, and diesel systems.
• Experience working on heavy trucks and 18-wheelers.
• Able to work on your own, set priorities, and make good calls.
• Safety-first mindset.
• Available to work about 50 hours per week.
• Scrap or recycling experience is a plus but not required.
